Austin, Part 1

Teacher Travels

Austin, TX
May 30 - June 1 - 2014

When deciding where to move next, I'm torn between Denver & Austin. Both cities are great for an active outdoor lifestyle, & after returning from each visit I am already planning the next! It seems the biggest difference between the cities is the climate & the plethora of Mexican food offered in TX (hmm, maybe this decision isn't as difficult as I thought).

Besides its landscape, Austin's food offerings are my favorite part of the city. Polvo's Mexican Restaurant proved to have killer margaritas & refried beans (this is how I judge all Mexican restaurants). A+

I traveled to Austin with six other friends, many of whom had never visited the city. Therefore, pictured below, are the many touristy things seen. We began with the search of Ray's Bar-B-Q, an iconic restaurant found on the TV show Friday Night Lights - turns out it had shut down & is now a tire shop! So sad.

We camped out at the Congress Avenue Bridge to see the famous sight of bats leaving their shelter in search of food. It seemed as if the bats weren't in the mood to eat, as many did not fly out. At least we were surrounded by the beautiful Lady Bird Lake & city view. In search of good coffee, we visited the Warehouse District, where we had a good time sipping our iced chai lattes in Halcyon. Little did we know that, as we chatted, a man also in the coffee shop slyly observed & drew us hanging out! We ended up purchasing the illustration - it was a great souvenir.

We then did the most famous foodie stops: Bangers Sausage House & Beer Garden (beer float pictured), Hopdoddy (el diablo burger + fried egg + avocado, accompanied by the skinny dip margarita recommended), Amy's Ice Creams, an Austin mural & finally Gourdoughs Specialty Donuts.

I love Austin. As the Dillon Panthers from Friday Night Lights would say...
TEXAS FOREVER

***I will be returning to Austin this weekend for ACL - I can't wait! More to come.
